Add film grain to an image.

Take the digitally-clean edge off a photo or artwork with adjustable grain, colour tint, faded blacks and vignette — without opening a full editor.

Colour & finish

Tip: grain that looks elegant on a large image can become muddy after social-media compression. Start lighter than you think, especially for small exports.

Private by design: the image stays in this browser tab.

Why add grain at all?

Digital images can look almost too clean, especially after heavy denoising, AI cleanup or flat phone processing. A restrained layer of grain adds small tonal variation that can make portraits, artwork and editorial images feel less sterile.

Grain size matters as much as amount

Fine grain is usually safer for portraits and social images. Larger grain reads more like 16mm texture and becomes part of the look. If you can clearly see individual blocks at normal viewing size, the grain is probably too large for a subtle finish.

For a moody indie-film feel

Try the Moody indie preset, then reduce saturation slightly, lift the blacks and use a very small cool or warm tint. The goal is not to copy a particular studio or film stock — it is to create a softer, less clinical photographic finish that still suits your image.

What this tool does

Add film grain to image

Add adjustable grain, tint, faded blacks and vignette for a less digitally-clean photographic finish.

The tool is designed to get that one job done without making you learn a full piece of software first.

Best results

Texture should support the image, not sit on top of it.

Judge the grain at normal viewing size and again after any social-media resize. Large or heavy grain can become blocky after compression.

Start with Subtle grain or 35mm clean. If the grain is the first thing you notice, reduce amount or size.

In plain English

What matters most.

Film grain adds texture; the tint, fade and vignette shape the mood. A restrained combination usually feels more photographic than pushing every control.

AI tools download their model on first use and local-processing tools work directly in your browser. Choose the specialist tool that best matches your subject for cleaner results.

File size & formats

Big images use more memory than their file size suggests.

What can I use?

JPG, PNG and WebP are the safest choices. Other image formats work when your browser can decode them.

Is there a size limit?

There is no extra OutMonkey upload-size cap in the browser interface. Very high-resolution images can still hit your browser or device memory limit, especially when enlarging them or running local models.

If the file is huge

If an enormous image will not process, use a smaller copy or reduce its pixel dimensions first. Keep the original untouched.
