Video & GIF

Compress a GIF.

Shrink an animated GIF by reducing dimensions and colour count.

Useful to know

Four things worth knowing.

What it is

What compression actually does.

Compression removes or rewrites data so the file takes fewer bytes. The useful target is the destination limit, not the smallest number you can force out of it.

Where it stops

Smaller has a cost.

More compression eventually shows up as softness, banding, blockiness, ringing or damaged audio and motion.

Check the ugly bits.

Play the exported file from beginning to end and check picture, sound, crop, timing and orientation.

Stop at the real limit.

If a form says 5 MB, aim comfortably below 5 MB and stop. There is no prize for turning a good file into a 400 KB one.
